The Great Books reading & discussion group begins the series (with a single booklet of the same name) : "The Will of the People: readings in American Democracy", on Sunday afternoon, January 27th, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Portage District Library (in board room). If you would like to join the group you may purchase a copy of the book mentioned for $12.95 (the library will
order a copy for you).
- The Declaration of Independence
- Federalist papers by Madison and others, Nos. 10, 51, and 78
- The Constitution of the U.S. with amendments
- Washington's Farewell Address
- Seneca Falls Convention declaration (1848)(Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and others, of the Women's Rights Convention)
- Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address, and the 2nd Inaugural Address
- Address of the American Equal Rights Association's 1st annual meeting (Sojourner Truth, 1867)
- Court case extract: U.S. v. Susan B. Anthony (1873)
- Langston Hughes, "Let America be America again" (1938)
- Dr. Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail (1963)
The group will meet every two weeks to discuss a selected reading and will continue to meet until the series is completed.
