"Great Books" Book Club

The Great Books reading & discussion group begins the series (with a single booklet of the same name) : "The Will of the People: readings in American Democracy", on Sunday afternoon, January 27th, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Portage District Library (in board room). If you would like to join the group you may purchase a copy of the book mentioned for $12.95 (the library will
order a copy for you).

The Series booklet contents:

  1. The Declaration of Independence
  2. Federalist papers by Madison and others, Nos. 10, 51, and 78
  3. The Constitution of the U.S. with amendments
  4. Washington's Farewell Address
  5. Seneca Falls Convention declaration (1848)(Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and others, of the Women's Rights Convention)
  6. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address, and the 2nd Inaugural Address
  7. Address of the American Equal Rights Association's 1st annual meeting (Sojourner Truth, 1867)
  8. Court case extract: U.S. v. Susan B. Anthony (1873)
  9. Langston Hughes, "Let America be America again" (1938)
  10. Dr. Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail (1963)

    The group will meet every two weeks to discuss a selected reading and will continue to meet until the series is completed.
