Welcome to the Portage History Page. This area is designed to showcase the unique historical items from Portage’s past which are currently housed within the Portage District Library’s Heritage Room. Portage, Michigan
The Portage Grocery Store and Post Office which once stood on the south side of Centre Avenue approximately half way between South Westnedge and Shaver Road. In the image Centre Avenue consists of only a dirt lane running in the foreground.
The reverse of this photograph reveals that this is the Southwell Store and that Mr. F. Southwell is seated on the front porch with his son Tom. The Southwell home can be seen next door. This image is looking southwest.
