Reading Together 2011
Reading Together invites people of all ages from all walks of life to read a single book. Thousands of county residents have participated in Reading Together programs since 2003. This year’s book is Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder. The author is coming to Kalamazoo on March 10.The following are Portage District Library’s programs to enhance discussion around the issues raised in Strength in What Remains:
The Immigrant Story: A Look at our Global Neighborhoods Through a Photographer’s Eye
March 6 from 2:00-4:30pm
This photography exhibit runs from February 1 to March 27 and features five local photographers. A “Meet the Artists” reception including Kenyan art and artifacts with music provided by Dunuya Drum & Dance Ensemble will run from 2:00-3:00pm on Sunday, March 6. This is followed by a panel discussion (3:00-4:00) exploring why people immigrate to the United States and their experiences assimilating into American culture. Panelists includes of Maia Storm, an immigrant lawyer and adoptive parent; photojournalist, Jake May, and Mohammad Haghshenas, owner of Silk Road Gallery. Exhibit curators Erik Holladay who will describe interviews with local immigrants and Bruce Hood who will share his photographs of global neighbors taken around the world for Foods Research Bank. THE ART OF CREATIVE NONFICTION
Thursday, March 31 from 6:30-8:00 pm
Creative nonfiction brings together literary memoir and biography, the personal essay and literary journalism. To help us better appreciate the literary craft and art of this burgeoning genre, we have invited Gail Griffin, author and professor at Kalamazoo College, Katherine Joslin, author and professor of English at Western Michigan University, and Kathy Jennings, journalist and freelance writer.
