Our Commitment to Accessibility
At The Portage District Library, we strive to optimize access to information, education, and entertainment for everyone in our community. Ensuring that all users, including those with disabilities, can easily navigate and engage with our online resources is essential to our role as a community center and leader in strengthening connections through learning, creativity, and culture. We view accessibility as a continuous journey towards greater inclusion.
To guide our accessibility work, we’ve partnered with Accessible Web, a team of experts in digital accessibility. Together, we are working to remove barriers and work towards conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title II.
What We’re Doing
- Regularly scanning our website for accessibility issues that can be detected automatically and actively working to remediate those issues.
- Making updates and improvements based on user feedback.
- Looking forward, we plan to have third party experts perform manual audits of our content so that we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of our website’s accessibility and work to remediate any additional issues. We plan to have this work complete by the end of the first quarter in 2026.
Known Limitations
We are aware of the following limitations and are actively working to remediate them by the Fall of 2025:
- Select boxes to browse databases by category and list databases by name on the “Databases” page and on the “Digital Library” page are missing accessible names.
- The select box to refine search results on our homepage is missing an accessible name.
- Images guiding users through the process to sign up to get library notices by text on the “Get Text Notifications” page are missing alternative text.
- There is an image of our Magnet Maker tool on the “Our Equipment” page that is missing alternative text.
- There are various contrast issues throughout the site pertaining to text content, buttons, and links.
- Our component to log in to Beanstack consists of a link nested within a button element, when it should be coded as a link.
- Content is inappropriately coded as a list on the following pages
- Links to “Learn how to use hoopla” on the “Digital Library” page are within the lists that precede them, but should be outside of these lists.
- The iFrame holding library service tutorial videos on the “Videos” page is missing a title.
